NON-INVASIVE PRENATAL TEST (NIPT)
NIPT is the most sensitive screening test to determine if a fetus is at high risk of having Down Syndrome. It is superior to Double Test, Triple Test, and NT Scan. Second Trimester Scan is not a replacement for the First Trimester DS Screen Test. This test is primarily introduced to screen for Down Syndrome and has expanded its scope to include other syndromes and genetic aberration. Patients are advised to undergo a pre-test counselling to determine when and which test to perform.
This test is best done following a 11-14 weeks scan, except in some special circumstances. If the First Trimester Scan picks up an anomaly, the patient should proceed to a diagnosed test. Diagnostic tests are invasive in nature. Specific NIPT tests are available for twin pregnancy. NIPT tests are not available for triplets currently.
CARRIER SCREENING TEST
Carriers for known genetic conditions may be screened for in couples prior to embarking upon a pregnancy. This may be relevant in parents with recurrent miscarriage, history of subfertility, consanguineous marriage, or undergoing IVF treatment.
Couples may be tested sequentially or simultaneously.
